Skill Builder Concept Analysis

The four skill builder concepts that I feel pertained to my experiences this quarter were other-centered messages, initiating conversation, clarifying supportive intentions, and describing feelings. Starting with other-centered messages I feel that I used this skill throughout this quarter. A particular example that comes to mind with my utilizing of this skill is just recently when I had a conversation with my sister, Danielle. My sister Danielle is currently taking a break from classes from BC as the last semester she spent there was very stressful for her, in which she became unsure of what she really wanted to do as well as if the current academic set up is efficient for her. We were in my car when she started discussing with me how she …show more content…
There are actually a few examples of this that I can recall from the past quarter, one was when I introduced myself to another in one of my classes, in which myself and they became acquainted. The second example of this was when I needed to take my student I.D, I of course at first tried to figure out where it was myself, since I tend to not like speaking to others unless necessary. So with the knowledge I gleaned from general information I could find I knew I needed to go to the library, in which I did, I was also vaguely aware that the area I needed to go to was on the lower …show more content…
I eventually got up to go to the bathroom, in which when I returned he had moved so his back was against the wall, he then explained to me how the sound of my eating the tangerine was bothering him and to please not chew that close to his ear again. I already know that Dennis has a few ticks about the sound of people chewing, but I had forgot, in which sometimes when I remember or he reminds me I get self-conscious about eating around him. We then had a little heart to heart about my getting self-conscious when he mentions those things, in which he also explained that he understood that it was just a little tick of his, so I have no reason to be self-conscious but to just please not do that again. Although, this was a seemingly ridiculous little discussion or why would on of our feelings be hurt, I see it as even with the little things we make sure to discuss our thoughts and feeling openly so that we have a better understanding of each other and so little things do not eventually become big things.
Throughout this quarter I feel that I have used these skill builder concepts in my personal life and with my academic life, so to speak. Some of these concepts I was familiar with, but I did not know I was until taking this course, in which I do feel that I am a pretty good communicator, particularly when it comes to understanding

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Effective communication and critical thinking are the other skills I sharped in the ALC. Also, this class improved my briefing skills and ability to stand in front of a group of people and talk to them about different subjects. The NCO week expanded my knowledge about leadership and key role we play as Non-Commissioned Offers in the Army. The briefing, we received from Training and Doctrine Command Sergeant Major Davenport certainly opened my vision on how to approach soldiers and resolve their problems as he stated “I am talking to you all not at you…

The skills that I will learn and develop in this course can help me in many of my remaining classes, such as Storytelling, Professional Writing, and Display Advertising and Email Marketing because these are the obvious courses that will require utilization of everything I will be learning during the English Composition 1 class from understanding the role the writing process plays in project development and in the entertainment industry to practicing academic integrity by citing research and external sources appropriately. However, it is my understanding that I will most likely be implementing the skills I learn here for every course because at Full Sail we are taught to write about and discuss subject matter with our peers throughout every…

Successes One area that I feel confident in is the introduction for interviews. We have practiced the introductions several times with different interviews, so it is understandable why I feel I have that mastered. One area specifically within the introductions that I feel confident in is the confidentiality agreement. Another area that I feel I have grown in is the knowledge of asking questions. In the beginning of the class when Professor Ball would be the client and every student was the social worker, I had trouble formulating questions to ask.…

Another skill that I used was active listening because good communication is key to success. Every successful group has good team leaders that engage with their team members. Furthermore, another theory that I found valuable was the goal setting theory because it directs and energizes people’s behavior. My team members and I set up goals that were challenging, but attainable. This process allowed us to create a life goal plan that was suitable for every member of the team and made them motivated.…

The skill that I still need to most work on refining is time management. Oftentimes throughout our section I would let our group get sidetracked for much too long simply because I was enjoying the discussion, or I was so glad that they were enjoying the discussion. Because of this there were numerous occasions where we did not make it to all the topics I wanted to discuss that day. I need to work on reeling a group back in to refocus and get back on topic. This particular shortcoming, I believe, was due to my inexperience as a Peer Facilitator.…
