Olaudah grew up in a large family with seven children including himself and his sister. When many of the neighborhood parents were working hard in the fields to provide for their families, the children would gather in the middle of the town and play. They would always have a couple of kids in the trees to look for any kidnappers (slave owners) that would take multiple children at a time (while the parents were not looking), and use them as slaves for themselves. On this particular day, Olaudah was watching in the trees looking for kidnappers. Olaudah quickly gave the signal to get the parents attention, but the kidnappers took all the kids, except Olaudah and his sister before the parents had arrived. The next day Olaudah and his sister were by themselves watching for anybody to invade the village when more kidnappers took both Olaudah and his sister. After a couple of days of traveling, Olaudah and his sister were separated, and Olaudah was taken onto a ship. Olaudah was taken to the lower deck, where he spent most of his time being seasick and not able to eat anything. Finally, when the ship got to their destination, many of the slaves were sold, but the ones that were left were taken to North America (Virginia) because they were unsaleable. There, in Virginia, the rest of the slaves were sold, and the only one left was Olaudah. Olaudah was miserable and was in so much pain. Finally, Olaudah was bought and taken to a man’s house to fan him, where he spent most of his time being scared that the owner would beat
