The Health Effects of Smoking Hookah
INTRODUCTION
Attention Getter: Tradition plays a big role in the human experience. Regardless of whether the tradition is beneficial or detrimental, often times people continue to carry them out in order feel that the period of time they live in is connected to all other periods of time, that they can become part of something larger than themselves. There are many traditions taking place today that can be traced back to centuries before now. One of these traditions is hookah, a water pipe used to smoke tobacco through cooled water.

Thesis: Experimental studies have shown that smoking hookah increases your risks for various diseases and is in general damaging to the body’s long term health. (Rheyanne, 2015).

Generally, when people smoke hookah it is done in a social gathering, taking place in groups and among friends or family. Therefore, it has longer durations than cigarette smoking and larger amounts of smoking. The longer the smoking session, the more nicotine and carcinogens inhaled and settled in the lungs. A water pipe smoker can be exposed to approximately the same amount of tar and nicotine in 45-60 minutes as an entire pack of cigarettes. Additionally,, hookah smoke is known to contain higher levels of arsenic, lead, and nickel, 36 times more tar, and 15 times more carbon monoxide than cigarettes(Alomari, 2014). Compared to a single cigarette, users are exposed to 100 to 200 times the amount of smoke during a 60 minute hookah session(J. Taylor Hays, 2015).
