Soccer Vs American Football

Football is a commonly known american sport played with a leather oval ball on a gridiron like field. Soccer is a more internationally known sport played with a round leather ball on a similar looking field. The basic element of both games is to score more points than their opponent in a given time by kicking or throwing the ball into the opponents goal or endzone. In most parts of the world, however, soccer is also known as futbol. Football is primarily played with hands and soccer is primarily played with feet. So why such similar names for such different games? Soccer was originally named association football in order to distinguish it from other types of foot ball. In england, in order to distinguish association football from rugby football (american football) it was called soccer. Yet the name football or futbol remains in many parts of the world. Each game involves 2 teams only. At different points in the game one team is labeled the defensive team and the other, the offensive team. There purpose is to carry the ball to the opposite end of the field in order to score (offense) or to prevent the other team from scoring (defensive). This is done, on behalf of both teams, by using strategic plays involving multiple passes both long and short distance. Outside of the individual games in each sport the overall/larger goal of the team is to win the necessary amount of games or beat the right teams in order to get to the championship. In american the championship for football is know as the superbowl, however in countries where soccer is played there are many different championships according to where you live and what league you play
