The social and cultural history of the United States from Reconstruction to the 1920 changed dramatically for many citizens. People in the Southern, United States, were living in a war of terror, miserable and full of danger. By the end of the Civil War white families would still have slaves. Furthermore, the old society had been completely destroyed including freedom.
In the Southern, United States, wealthy families abandon their homes due to the fact of the danger that the city was running through. Wealthy families were not caring for those four hundred acres left behind but caring for their security. Eventually, those four hundred acres were given after all to African Americans for settlement. Giving away the total power of self-control and having no right for anything. To be a slave is to have no control of your life decisions and now these people have the need to express their choices and abilities. “We want to be placed in land until we can buy it and make it our own.”
African Americans claimed their freedom simply because they were tired of being abused. Wealthy families kept slaves to work for them and it was more than likely that the slaves were not content with the idea that others had of them. The plantation was twelve hundred and sixty acres with hundred and fifty slaves leaving almost nine acres to each slave themselves. Many “Negros” as they were named, declared that they were free and that they were going to leave as soon as they were ready.
The Southern, United States, suffered tremendously traumatic events were society eventually had to go through to have at the end an answer and a reconstruction of the south and more importantly of the citizens. Many slaves took abundant time to recuperate their freedom and citizenship.
