While activities of national borders can be passed off as necessary for the security of the country, the realm of social borders is much more volatile and has no realistic excuse for when or why it is used. Immigrants may seem like the type of issue only related with physical borders, however they are also just as embedded with social borders as well. It is hard enough for an immigrant to find a social group like them but add in different circumstances, it becomes a quest. In many cases immigrants come to the US because who they are isn’t acceptable in their country. An example of this is written by Erika Marquez where it is discussed being a gay Columbian, “More than twenty years passed before my relative’s migratory status allowed him to go back to Columbia”(215). When people emigrate from their native country because of who they are, their search for belonging is immediately harder. Marquez goes on to explain how this relative had to find a latino community of gays or who accepted gays. Though they exist, they might be hard to find. An issue that is not publicized and it could be, is the the comparison of mail order brides to traditional immigrants. Our reason why society is so enamored with illegal immigrants is because they are in the news and the reason why so many try to come here this way is because our Visa system is so slow. However according to Schaeffer‐Grabiel, these brides have no issue obtaining papers to immigrate to the US. While the paperwork might be slightly different, it is a matter or someone who is not bringing anything to this country against someone who would bring labor to this country.
