I can’t believe that I just finished my first year as a college student. To be completely honest, it went by fast. Being on a college campus, let alone a college student was so surreal to me. It was really unbelievable. I learned a lot of things that I never imagined I would come across of learning. If I must admit, the transition from high school to college was arduous. I was like a bird that was waiting for its owner to tell me which way to go or what song to sing. In high school, there was a pattern that I had to follow in regards to the waking up, having breakfast, the student/teacher ratio/ etc. In college, it was completely different. Most of my classes were either in the afternoon or in the evening. So I had to get used to waking up or even going to sleep at a certain time. I went to college with the intention of majoring in Economics/Global Economics; however, I have decided to switch gear and focus more on social justice matter. I am now thinking of pursuing a major in Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. I am affiliated with Oakes College, one of the ten colleges at UCSC, and their core values center around Social Justice Issues. Every freshman is required to take a Core class, a writing class that focus specifically on the themes of the ten colleges, and I had the privileged of learning about how our society functioned. It really made me more conscious of my surrounding and how systematic forces such as the media has played such a significant role on how underprivileged people of color view the world. This class made me more analytical and critical about certain things. It has definitely made me view the United States in a whole new perspective. I truly felt that this has made me grow as an individual because it solved most of the missing puzzles that did not made sense while growing

As an African American female, there is a constant battle with being able to feel as if you are enough. Society makes black women feel as if her skin is not beautiful, as if God did not take his time creating her melanin and the course of her hair. They label us as loud, aggressive and incompetent. On the other hand, you have people that look just like you, who fight the same battle as you against the world, and they make you feel as if you are not worthy either. Therefore, I’m left with the question “What is my purpose?”…

High school helped me prepare for college in the sense that I partly know how to write essays, I can pull off all nighters with no problems, and I’m accustomed to large amounts of work. I heard college students do things such as set fourteen minute alarms for naps because fifteen minutes is too long, and if this is true then I’m already ahead of the game. Although, my professor is going to fail me if I so much as turn in an assignment late, and I think that’s where high school gave me too much…

Personally, college is a different environment compared to what high school students are used to. College teaches students to be more independent relying on ourselves to take care of our studies and learning process. Take High School for example. High School teachers will constantly remind students of deadlines for assignments while professors could care less if students missed the deadline. Because college students are considered more “mature”, students are required to manage their own time checking due dates for each class themselves.…

College vs. High School High school and college may appear to be closely related, but in reality they are two distinct worlds. It is crucial to recognize that the two, however slightly similar, mostly contrast in order to successfully complete the transition between the two. In transitioning from high school to college, a student would need to know what to expect, specifically how some behaviors that would have been considered taboo in the former are often acceptable in the latter. Colleges tend to offer a more substantial amount of freedom. High school on the other hand tends to focus on discipline and structural matters.…
