“It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around. However, what they don’t know is that in reality there are rules to be able to be a member, such as a good GPA, no alcohol or drug substances …show more content…

Social Media plays an important role in the Alpha Sigma Alpha community. This community uses social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and their own personalized website. This genre targets a more general public. People who are interested in joining the sorority, university faculty, pledges, and ex-pledges, or any person who is vaguely interested or wants to learn about the sorority they are able to do so by visiting any of these websites. Facebook and Twitter keep the members and the public updated with daily posts about information of any kind such as events, information about members and ex-members, upcoming activities, and time and place of meeting and it also allows the community to keep communication between each other, even if they are not from the same campus. The website is a more formal genre they use. On the website, one can find the values of the sorority, the history, pictures of the events held by the community and of their members. The website also posts more official calendars, which include the upcoming events for the sororities in all the universities. Since the public for this genre is more diverse the language used in these websites is more formal and acknowledge the public with general vocabulary, words that are used on the daily basis, and are more detailed that way there are no confusions. Also, in social media, the fonts, and colors used in the websites are basic that way people

It conflicts with rules and ritual (Stuber 2011). Ritual within the sorority world are rites of passages that members go to. Women go through initiation ceremony during which time a person becomes a full member at the end of their new member period. The sororities beliefs and values can be seen in the ritual (Callais 1987). Many researchers have asked questions about how women are selected for sororities, is it on different criteria, how rigorous scrutiny, or are new members being evaluated by looks (Stuber 2011).…

Colleges and businesses don’t want someone who will embarrass them; they want the best they can get. They want people who will bring positive options to the establishment. Growing up, I definitely had a warped view on Greek Life. I presumed being in a sorority would be how the media portrayed it – crazy, dramatic, and dangerous. However, coming to Babson, I saw a different story. I observed a community of strong women supporting each other through encouragement and shared purposes. Every sorority woman I met my first semester of freshman year raved about their experiences and passion for their sisterhood.…

or any sorority for that matter, except for what I hear on my college campus, which are basically stigmas (good and bad) that are tied to each sorority. After months and months of my ears being flooded with “Zeta this, Gamma Rho that, AKA this, and Delta that,” and my friends telling me that I should pledge Delta because I’m very blunt and have an attitude, I literally thought the whole sorority (sisterhood) and fraternity (brotherhood) thing was stupid and childish. I told myself that I would never be apart of any sisterhood and I would be my own support, and my own organization. However, after continued pestering from my friends about how I should become a Delta because of my fitted Delta personality, I decided to do some research. The one thing that sold me on wanting to become a…

After research on the Internet, you will find articles about several sororities raising money for the “Make-A-Wish” foundation, or simply helping out in the community. Without much knowledge on the subject, and by simply relying on predictable nightly news, you may only see the story of a sorority getting kicked off campus because of a racial caption on a picture that went viral. Both sororities and Greek life alike are usually never seen on a national scale unless a committed act is inappropriate or…

The new fraternity was much like Phi Beta Kappa except that its purpose was social more than literary. Although the university opposed the new society, students encouraged the new fraternity and created two more the Sigma Phi on March 4, 1827 and Delta Phi on November 17, 1827. These three fraternities formed the Union Triad and was the big reason for the expansion of the American college fraternity. All of the women's groups were called fraternities in the beginning because no other word existed. Then in 1882, Gamma Phi Beta was named a "sorority", a coined word suggested by their advisor who was a professor of Latin, and who thought the word "fraternity" wasn’t right for a group of ladies.…
