Only One I Know

As Sonny Lancaster looked at the blank road ahead of himself, his mind continued to wander its way back to the sign. The road sign, directly above the La Rue’s Restaurant slogan, that read “Find the Lord before you need Him, and never, ever sell out your pride or saddle. Cause life's a long, long ride.” He couldn't help but think that he’s 51 years into his ride and still chasing a wild dream some call rodeo. He chuckled at the thought but deep down he was sorta proud to still be on the circuit. He tapped the brake and slowed his old rig down to give his heading partner a little time to take a sharp turn into a crowded parking lot. The parking lot was full of people all looking for the same thing, a high. The neon sign shined the words “Melody Bar and Grill” . He let off the brake

With a turn of a key he commanded the chevy’s engine to come to a complete stop. He stuck his hand out the window and opened the truck’s door from the outside, seeing as that was the only door handle left on it. As he limped to the door he pulled out the key the check-in assistant gave him, opened the door and then proceeded into the small room. Exactly 4 hours later he awoke. Following the normal routine he was dressed, ready and out the door in 15 minutes. It was the ninth day of the National Finals Rodeo, Saturday. The team roping had been highly difficult to place, let alone win, all week but despite the odds Sonny and Kevin were holding the reserve champion title as of that moment. With two nights to go there was plenty of pressure knowing that it would take winning first both nights left to win the gold buckle and title that him, Kevin and every other rodeo cowboy on the planet goes to bed dreaming about. It would be highly difficult but it was possible, everything's possible. Eventually, Sonny turned the sharp right into the massive, freshly paved parking lot. Ahead of him towered the Los Angeles Expo Center sign. He slid his hand out the window

“One for the Road” was quite the interesting story. For a person like me who enjoys small horror, not to much or too little, this is the perfect short story. Herb Tookey took most of my attention in the story. He was the “wise elder” of the group, he always knew what to do to help and gave information when needed. When trouble came he answered and helped.…

Within Sonny’s Blues, James Baldwin explores the narrator’s obsession with his other people’s suffering and how this consumes his life to the extent that he can no longer perceive his own struggle. In this way, Baldwin suggests that life’s greatest suffering is an inability to understand the sorrow of a loved one. When the narrator is first introduced to the audience, he is a man burdened by responsibility and his own heavy subconscious. As his mind wanders after he learns about Sonny’s arrest, his dark thoughts and grim outlook represent how he has both suffered himself, and watched his friends suffer as “…their heads bumped abruptly against the low ceiling of their actual possibilities.”…

Where are you going, Where have you been was the most interesting Joyce Carol Oates short story I have read so far. She dedicated this short story to Bob Dylan, and you can see in the story the inspiration she drew from his song “It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. The two main correlations from the song in the short story that stood out to me was, the lyrics “The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense” and “Your lover who just walked out the door”. I relate the lyrics “The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense”, to Connie crossing the highway with her friends. Was it sensible for them to be doing this, as it was not where there parents knew they were?…

In James Baldwin’s short story “Sonny’s Blues,” Sonny shows that no matter how bad someone’s circumstances are, they can always overcome them. Baldwin writes “it’s repulsive to think you have to suffer that much”(168), meaning people suffer more than normal, if they worked hard and didn’t go down the path they chose in the first place. Although sometimes people can't control their paths in life due to their circumstances at home and other aspects of their life, they can still work hard to overcome them. In Baldwin’s short story, Sonny’s early life in Harlem shapes him into the man and musician he dreams of being.o This growth can be shown through his friend on a street Harlem, his parent’s death, and Sonny’s relationship with his brother.…

The story Victory Lap by George Saunders is ambiguous and has many unexpected twists. Through the characters’ thoughts, it is revealed that who they appear to be isn’t always who they turn out to be. The story starts off slightly confusing, as it begins in the mind of Alison Pope. The first few paragraphs suggest that the story is about a young girl pretending to be a princess, until her thoughts change to her dance recital, then to her family, and many other things. It then becomes clear that Alison Pope is a young, teenage girl who has a lot of thoughts running through her head at any moment in the day.…
