As you “converse” with the text, you will develop a better understanding of what is going on, what motivates the characters, and underlying conflicts. 1. It is not surprising that T. Ray was once a different man who truly loved Deborah. The reason for this is because he never wanted to talk about her or answer any questions directed towards her existence. This may have been a touchy subject for T. Ray due to the fact that his own daughter took away the woman who he was married to. It is believable that T. Ray was once loving because he did end up raising Lily even if he did a horrible job at doing so.…

Journal # 1 Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a book I read for my University English class. People always say don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but I am that one guy that does. When I first looked at the book to be completely honest, I thought it had something to do with witches or something really unrealistic. I know I have a wild imagination. The first couple of pages of the book got me hooked instantly, I loved how the book just starts and how the narrator gets right into his adventure as a young man into the Congo River.…
Prologue The stench of the trash was absolutely nauseating. Even though my brain was screaming at me to get rid of the repulsive gunk on my shirt, my legs couldn’t stop running. Winston was just a limp ball of fur in my shaking arms. I had to hold on to him, otherwise I would be lost in this cold world of darkness that was embedding itself with steel claws into my heart.…
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, conflict - both internal and external - portrays a major development in the theme and plot of the young boys in this novel. On an island composed of only pre-adolescent boys, it is unquestionable that there would be conflict amongst them. Golding blatantly shows the reader the external conflicts that occur between one another, including both physical and verbal altercations. The author also cryptically gives the reader a display of the conflict the boys struggle with within themselves and their own thoughts. Despite the many instances of external conflict, the subtle internal conflicts are much more critical to the plot and overall theme of Lord of the Flies.…
Scarlet Letter Journal Analysis Journal #2: In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the scarlet letter negatively affects Hester because it excludes her from society, labels her as the embodiment of sin in the town, and grants her a lot of disrespect among the people. Hester lived in a cottage that was far away from the whole town and completely surrounded by woods, which already made her feel separate from the community. Not only that, but every time she went to the busy Boston area, her contact with society made her feel “banished, and as much alone as if she inhabited another sphere” (Hawthorne 78). Hester is obviously suffering from isolation already, due to her sin and the scarlet letter setting her apart from everyone…
To me, this book strongly conveys the loss of innocence throughout the boys on the deserted island. They began their journey as sweet, kind, innocent school boys just looking for somewhere safe to go. As the book continues, they become cruel and have no innocence. My chosen theme is the loss of innocence.…
