The boys in the agoge were taught to read and write purely for practical reasons, like reading orders. Evidence of this is in document D “The Spartans learned to read and write for purely practical reasons” This shows that they didn’t focus on things outside of war. This may be one of the many, many reasons that Sparta fell. Without proper education they couldn’t effectively rule. The only thing they knew how to do was fight. It’s hard to believe that grown men didn’t know how to write a paragraph.
Sparta was founded on one thing, war, and they made all of the Spartans feel it. They were very abusive. They tortured boys in the agoge, and forced men to serve their entire life.Evidence of this is in document B “So the Spartans Chastise[punish]those who get caught stealing badly.” This proves that they whipped innocent boys, not for stealing, but for stealing badly. For this reason is why they fell. They were more focused on war and military than a healthy government and community.
In conclusion, although Sparta had some strengths, like the innovative Phalanx the strengths outweigh the weaknesses because of my 3 reasons stated above:Boys were taken away from their families, The Spartans lacked education, and they were abusive. These prove that when it comes to Sparta the weaknesses outweigh the
