Star Wars: Gender-Typed Toys

Decent Essays
Recently, Star Wars movie number seven came to theaters all around the United States. With great movies like this one, come many toys and merchandise for the movie. You’d think they would make toys out of all the main characters right? Well they did not. One of the main characters from the movie Rey, was the only main character who did not have that many toys made of her, even though she was the most demanded. The creators claimed that they had plenty of toys planned for Rey, but many believe that this is all just gender-biased, and that the girl toys are not as important as the boy toys. For example in the article “Asleep at the switch? “Force Awakens” heroine missing from toy line” it says,”The company wanted to avoid giving away a key plot point where Rey picks up the lightsaber wielded by Finn in order to duel new baddie Kylo Ren.” The people buying the toy would not have anything from the movie spoiled from a toy like this, because they obviously just think it is a toy for fun and the lightsaber is just added for better effect.

The article “Poste-Princess Models of Gender: The New Man in Disney/Pixar” by Gillam and Wooden uses great examples to show how the views on masculinity is changing. In the article, they talk about ‘emasculation of the alpha male’, which is when you deprive a man of his role. In they describe a man’s masculinity using moves such as toy story, little mermaid, the Incredibles, etc. They talked about how Buzz Lightyear and his companion Sheriff Woody see themselves based “on a masculine model of competition and power” (Gillam and Wooden, 2008). They do this by using their desire to be the “favorite toy” (Gillam and Wooden, 2008).…

Nguyen, Sandra: Companies do not have moral obligations. They are just trying to sell their toys without even thinking of the boy and girls individual liking. People usually think that boys will like to have gun and soldiers toys, while girls play with dolls and do house work. Not caring about how the kids that purchase it will feel. Girls that do play with dolls will look at the dolls and judge themselves as well as others if they do not look like the dolls.…

Violence in violent video games had remained to be a major concern in society. In addition to the controversy of VVGs, a new subject emerged when gender activists began to enter the discussion and industry. While studies of videogames using sociological and gender theories had existed before, these issues had been highlighted by many organizations in most recent years. One of the more prominent activists is Anita Sarkeesian. She is a Canadian-American feminist (owner of the YouTube channel "Feminist Frequency") who analyzes the gender tropes (more specifically the portrayal of women) in videogames through her video series Tropes vs. Women in Video Games.…

If children’s toys were marketed based on racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic groups, a major backlash would occur; however, companies have produced and marketed gender-differentiated toys to the masses for decades if not centuries. In the midst of the modern push toward gender equality, aisles are still separated by pink and blue, aggression and domesticity, heroes and princesses, and so forth. Finding a toy or activity for children not unambiguously targeted towards male or female children has grown increasingly difficult, and this trend poses a potential threat toward the gender equality so desired by the public today. In studies conducted to assess the impact of these gender-stereotyped toys and marketing, researchers and authors are finding…

My choice as a gendered toy for both girl and boy was Marvel action figures. For the boy, I chose to write about the Marvel Spider-Man and in particular Marvel’s Lasher. The packaging black and white with the name “Marvels Lasher” displayed a crossed a red banner with white lettering. These colors, representing power and blood work to further the male mindset of superiority. Toys are a major component in young children’s lives. However, many toys are specifically designed based on the gender roles our society has enforced. For instance, girls are taught to believe that they are meant to become mothers, great house wives, and simply be feminine. This perception of girls has led many toy companies to produce and sell dolls, domestic items like kitchen appliances, and baking goods.…

It deals with the breakdown of binaries, which refers to typical “masculine” and “feminine” behavior. We can see how society has embedded and emphasized typical behaviors relating to gender in A Doll’s House. A man is supposed to be the leader of the family and usually makes the most money in the family. Project One: Research Investigation Work Skylar Foley Southern New Hampshire University Project One: Research Investigation Work The social science issue that I have chosen is “the influences of gender-specific toys on children.” There are a couple of reasons I have chosen this issue, one being that children are constantly learning, they are our future and we want to teach them that they have the freedom to choose for themselves. Another reason being that some parents truly believe that boys playing with Barbies and girls playing with G.I. Joes would turn them into becoming a homosexual. I’m a firm believer that homosexuality is not developed but the person is born homosexual.…

Social construction of gender is a popular topic in today 's society. The Feminist Agenda states, “A social construction is something that doesn 't exist independently in the "natural" world, but is instead an invention of society” (1). In other words, social construction of gender is formed by the ways in which we view and value gender roles. According to society, females are supposed to be interested in makeup, fashion, and colors, such as pink; however, men are expected to be into the gym, sports, and colors such as blue. Although these customs and rules do not exist, people all act as if they do because it 's in their nature from the time they have been born.…

There are “two kinds of moral laws, …one in man and a completely different one in a woman. They do not understand each other ….” Said dramatist Henrik Ibsen. This dilemma holds completely true for Nora Helmer and Torvald Helmer in the literary work “A Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen. The play “A doll House” by Henrik Ibsen explored the gender role in the nineteenth century, an abnormal relationship between Nora and Torvald, and brought a social structure which opens an eye of the viewer and made them think about it.…
