“You only fail, if you never try” are lyrics from the song, “Start Over” by The Afters that have had a remarkably potent impact on my life. It further cemented my drive to succeed. I have always been an ambitious person, and refuse to quit even in tough times. Throughout my freshman year, maintaining straight A’s was effortless. It felt like middle school to me. However, once I started my sophomore year, completing my schoolwork with excellence no longer came naturally. It became more difficult to maintain an A every quarter and on every assignment in my classes. While I often became frustrated when I was unable to exceed or even meet my high standards, I geared my emotions towards my work. I became incredibly tenacious and put more …show more content…
I acknowledge that I do not have as much experience as my teammates, since I started playing only five years ago. I worked hard to play my best at every game and practice and to obtain as much knowledge of the sport that I possibly could. Since my freshman year, I have been playing as a member of both the varsity and junior varsity teams. With that, my minutes in varsity games are on the minimal, but I still work just as hard to keep my spot on the team. For our senior game, though, I was one of three seniors that were not given any playing time. It was incredibly frustrating and heartbreaking, but the following day, I showed up to practice because I made a commitment to my team and myself. I saw this lack of playing time for that particular game as a failure because I expected to play in my senior game. I was not playing at a high enough level to register on my coach’s radar during practices and the games prior. From this experience, I have moved past the game and decided to keep working through the rest of this season to play to the best of my ability and support my team as we move on to the playoffs in the coming

I have heard this quote spoken at least once in some way by all of my coaches. This aphorism means that if you want to win/succeed at something, then you can never give up, you must give 100% all the time and, if you do give up then you will end up failing. One of the most memorable times that I have heard this quote was during the same soccer game in the previous example, during senior night. It was halftime and we were losing by a couple of goals at this point.…

I was filled with anger and frustration, covered in sweat, standing at the serving line in my backyard preparing to serve. I held the ball in my hand, hoping and praying my serve would go over the net. I tossed the ball in the air and hit it with all of my might. I watched the ball come off my hand, my heart beating a thousand times a minute. When the ball hit the net, my heart sank and all I wanted to do was scream and cry at the same time.…

“Strength and growth only come only through continuous effort and struggle” - Napoleon Hill. As a Sophomore I took 1 challenging class, which was an honors class, because I was afraid of struggling and fear of failing. I was almost mentally accepting that I would never have the capability or succeed in Honors classes and AP classes. I began to find out the term “Honors” was just a word the education placed to intimidate individuals to not challenge themselves. To this day this has been my biggest regret; not challenging myself with tough classes.…

The goal of Boys & Girls Clubs is: “to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school, on time, with a plan for the future.” As a Club staff with little weight behind me to support this goal, it makes me a stone’s throw away from being labeled a hypocrite when I almost didn’t graduate from high school, let alone have a plan for the future. My childhood wasn’t glamorous enough to brag about, nor was it full of grief-stricken struggles that would warrant a tug at any heartstrings. It was simple. I grew up with both of my parents and my brother who was 4 years my senior.…
