The small dinghy that had dropped anchor in the turbulent waters of Stillwater Cove moved in synchronized rhythm with the undulating waves that knocked against the side and the occupant cursed under their breath, “Damn, the water’s rough tonight. I’m glad I don’t get seasick or I’d be puking over the side right now.”
Turning the vessel into the choppy current, they surveyed the surrounding area. Stillwater Cove made the perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway or as the individual on the dinghy planned—an unfortunate accident.
Normally, the cove displayed a picturesque view of the California coastline with its serene seas, scenic rock formations, and abundant sea life, particularly abalone. Skin and scuba divers often visited this spot

The intruder then scrambled on deck, stealthily tiptoed downstairs until the third step squeaked loudly, and they immediately stopped to stand motionless and listen for any sound coming from the master suite— nothing. Sensing they were in the clear, they continued down the remaining steps to peek through the cracked bedroom door where the man and woman lay sprawled haphazardly on top of the coverlet. With a malicious leer, the voyeur noticed they had succumbed to the drug before they even had time to change clothes or to climb under the covers. The room was eerily quiet except for the couple’s cadent breathing.
Sauntering into the cabin, the trespasser wandered around the beautifully decorated suite. They had been in this room many times in the past and it looked the same. The warm tones of lacquered teak wood contrasted against the creamy off-whites in the furnishings and carpeting. The en suite had a freestanding tub, his and her washbasins, and a separate shower constructed to resemble a Hawaiian waterfall cascading across lava rock. Strategically placed live tropical palms along the curved wall in the en suite gave the room a luxurious private grotto quality.
