The Brief Strategic Family Therapy(BSFT) involves using different strategies by the by therapist to eliminate undesired behavior. The idea behind strategic family therapy is to assign tasks to families to change those aspects of the system that continues the behavior that is causing the issues. According to BSFT focuses primarily on the present interactions that occur between family members and are observable to the therapist. The therapy can be delivered in home or in a clinical setting depending on the needs of the family.

Reframing will create motivational change for the family. Families are not just coming together for therapy they are also assigned tasks to work on at home. The goals for SFT should be to help reframe the family dynamics rather than removing the adolescent form the home. The goal is to focus on for this approach are to eliminate or reduce the adolescent problem behaviors and to change family interactions associated with the problems.
According one author BSFT has four important steps that coincide with key principles previously discussed. Firstly the BSFT family and therapist work as a team and developing a therapeutic alliance is essential.
