Throughout the last half-century, dress codes and uniforms in schools have been a big topic of debate. They were introduced in many urban schools to help stop the rise of gang affiliation and in private schools to help create an inclusive environment for students. Implementing dress codes and uniforms were not always welcomed, as some students and parents feel that dress codes force every child to fit into a mold and take away the right of a child to be individual. Critics may say that uniforms are too expensive for low-income families, but school districts have consistently found a way to supply families that could not afford to purchase uniforms free ones (Holloman, LaPoint, Alleyne 267-281). Uniforms lower the amount of money families spend on clothes every year, which takes a huge burden off of every family’s budget. Additionally, uniforms lower the money spent on clothes by families because when uniforms are not implemented, parents are often too afraid to say ‘no’ to their child’s request for $100 or more shoes. In fact, uniforms set children up to wear appropriate clothing for the rest of their professional lives (Gereluk 106-114). Children that go to schools that do not have dress codes may never truly understand what is appropriate in a business setting. Children that wear uniforms learn from the start of their academic careers what is acceptable and appropriate. Employers do not see someone that cannot even wear proper business attire as someone that can flourish in a job setting, and are much less likely to choose that prospective employee for the job (Holloman, LaPoint, and Alleyne 267-281).
