Character Analysis Of All Summer In A Day By Ray Bradbury

Imagine moving from Earth, to a planet where the sun shines once every seven years, and when it isn’t shining its raining. Well that is what the main character of Ray Bradbury’s short story “All Summer in a Day” had to go through. Margot, the main character, moved from Ohio to the planet Venus, when she was only four years old. She had been living on Venus for about five years and it was hard for her since the sun meant so much to her. She got picked on and bullied a lot, just because she was so obsessed with the sun. She remembered how the sun looked and felt, while the other kids didn’t. She would remind them of this when she would talk only about the sun, which seemed to make the kids jealous. The message of the story is that jealousy can …show more content…
In the beginning of the story, the kids were very rude towards Margot but by the end that all changed. Bradbury painted a very vivid scene in the reader's head, the text stated, “They walked slowly down the hall in the sound of cold rain. They turned through the doorway to the room in the sound of the storm and thunder, lightning on their faces, blue and terrible. They walked over to the closet door slowly and stood by it.” The reason Bradbury wrote this piece is to build suspense and make the reader anxious. In addition, this shows how jealousy changes a person. In the beginning the kids are very impolite to Margot and tease her a lot, but clearly that wasn’t their normal selves. The reason is, the kids are being so caught up in their jealousy they didn’t realize what they were doing was wrong, but, only until they came back inside did they realize that they locked Margot in a closet. The reason they take so long to get Margot out of the closet is because they are ashamed of themselves and can’t believe what they have done. Their harsh actions really hurt Margot and left her feeling miserable, since they took away the only thing that Margot really loved. Jealousy is very dangerous and could leave someone hurt, because when somebody is jealous they usually aren’t aware of what they are doing or saying, and so they might say something that they don’t mean or wouldn’t normally

Unlike Margot, they had never gotten the opportunity to see the sun. Hearing her regularly talk about it and even write poems--it brought them despair. They thought that the only way to get even and feel what Margot had felt would be to take that sun away from her...and enjoy it all for themselves. One can argue that the children just didn’t know better, and that is why they behaved like this, but that is in fact a misinterpreted assumption. This is because after they had seen the sun, they were no longer jealous, therefore, they had stopped acting boorish.…

In Ray Bradbury’s All Summer in a Day, readers learn that jealousy can make people do things that they wouldn’t normally do. This is obvious because of how the other kids pick on and hate Margot. The other kids who live there are angry at Margot because of the fact that she had arrived on Venus when she was four years old while the others had lived there their entire lives. On Venus, the sun comes out once every seven years.…

How does Margot survive for five years without seeing the sun and instead being drenched with rain on Venus. Margot has not seen the sun for about 5 years and it is about to come out for the first time in five years. What my thoughts on this are that Margot should be more grateful because other kids seen the sun seven years ago but have no memory of it because they were two years old. So Margot should stop acting so impatient because, She has seen the sun more than any of the other kids because she lived on earth for four years of her life. The other kids need more of a chance to see the sun more than she does because they can't even remember what the sun looks like, and finally Margot should just be grateful that she saw the sun for longer and she hasn't lived on venus her whole life.…

Everyone has an aspiration to fit in, but it is not worth giving up one's individuality. In Ray Bradbury’s story, “All Summer in a Day”, he tells of children that end up giving up their individual morals, and then regret it. Similarly, in the writings of “Ponies” and “Harrison Bergeron”, the writers KIJ Johnson and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. speak of characters who want to fit in, but end up giving up their uniqueness to do so. They end up feeling remorse about trying to fit in. Fitting in can have a negative effect- causing someone to lose what’s different about them.…
