Hughes tell us that he was saved from sin before going on 13.He was placed on the front row of the mourners bench at church with all the other young sinners. He describes how the people are reacting. People are singing, reciting sermons, preaching and shouting when someone is being saved. He was told that he will see light and that something would happen to him when he is saved and that Jesus was supposed come. This was Hughes first time witnessing this tradition and he was confused because the Jesus he was supposed to see isn't coming for him. What was supposed to be “salvation” seemed ironic to him.
