Summary Of Mr. Freeman's Speak

Melinda entered her Freshman year in high school as a completely different person as the one who recently left junior high school. Melinda had gained a reputation of being weird and deprived of personal manners. She became antisocial and isolated after she had called the police during a party, and nobody understood her reasons other than she was weird and maybe a party pooper. Art class allows Melinda to explore her personal emotions in a manner which she finds rewarding and satisfying. Mr. Freeman, the art teacher is probably the one responsible for helping Melinda’s emotional and psychological growth. Melinda works on a tree project at her art class that is accountable to for the emotional, psychological and personal growth. Melinda learns more than academics through her classes, she also learns to deal with conflict. It is her art class that provide the highest learning objective because Mr. Freeman treats students like intelligent human beings and he tries to show them the reality of his life, beyond his role of a teacher. Mr. Freeman discusses things about the school board that he finds unwelcome, and this helps Melinda see him as an honest man who speaks the truth, even if this brings him difficulties. Freeman teaches Melinda that she can use art to express and understand her suffering. Melinda’s father asks her to take care of an oak tree and to prune it because this will allow the tree to grow and develop into the strongest tree in the block. Melinda does not want to prune the tree as she fears that it might not develop and die like she is dying due her personal suffering. Melinda was raped and she had not found the courage to speak to anyone about it until one day she decided to confide in her friend Rachel. She was in a devastated position and the oak tree reminded her of the rape but while she sits under another tree, she comes to the conclusion that she is no longer completely dead
