In this essay I will be talking about three different representations and their accuracy, balance and completeness. They are as followed.
Representation one is an A level textbook that has the suffrage movement written from 1832-1931. The book was written by Bob Whitfield. The text is relevantly accurate. Some of the points that the author makes are incorrect. For example the source suggests that “The National League for Opposing Woman Suffrage was founded in 1911.” When researching I found that this was incorrect, in fact the National League for Opposing Woman Suffrage was founded in 1910 not in 1911. There is not enough information give, and the information that is given is incorrect. At first I knew this would not be a source to trust, because it is published by Punch Magazine, which produces humourous articles for the eyes of publicity. The drawing shows three policemen hanging over the fence, which shows that the magazine has overreacted whilst drawing this. The source also suggests that there was one woman doing jiu-jitsu on all the policemen who are apparently scared off her. From my own knowledge I know this is wrong, because when doing jiu-jitsu like many of their other protests the suffragettes would do it together, so there would never be one of them alone. At the bottom of the picture in the middle it says “The suffragette that knew jiu-jitsu”, this is in fact correct by the word ‘suffragette’ it shows they are talking about one and this short sentence is being referred to the suffragette in the picture. I inferred that they could be talking about Edith Garrud, she was the first suffragette to know how to do jiu-jitsu and she also taught other suffragettes. In terms of balance, the source is bias and is more supportive of the suffragette movement and the source suggests the police were scared of the suffragettes. The source doesn’t answer the question either, so I wouldn’t choose this source to show it supposedly answers the
