One side consists of a silver machine that dispenses different sodas when you poke the correct sequence on the screen; a shelf with brightly colored packages with labels like “Sun Chips;” and a large, self-contained, shelving unit with containers of varying size full of sandwiches and salads that projects cold air into the area. That was until I found a recipe on how to make some chocolate chip cookies and said, “I can totally do this!” an hour and a half later, (yes ... I struggled) and with some guidance of my mother, a batch of cookies popped out of the oven. His use of the term “pivots” (2) suggests that her movements are efficient and mechanical rather than natural, and that she spends no more time than is necessary at his table. As he repeats three times that she smiles at him, he conveys the sense that her smiles are automatic and part of her waitress persona rather than indicative of any genuine pleasure in his presence. He also mentions that she brings him a menu, brings bread in a basket and refills his wine glass, actions that she has no doubt repeated for countless customers. The routine leads him to liken her to “every waitress/who has ever served me,/and every waiter, too” (17-19). In these repetitive acts, she loses her individuality and becomes merely the type of server, whether male or female.…

Corrie Lynn white poem, gravy depicts the speaker reminisce on the past events and how enjoyable they were. The poem is written with nostalgia provoked by the rummaging under the driver’s seat and the sudden thought of what the speaker was likely to find; one more quarter, a tampon, or a bottle of water.
