Many children are more captivated to watch television shows because they are fascinated with the various cartoon characters. One of the top popular educational shows, where children starting from birth to age five are watching is Super Why!. Super Why!, is a twenty-six minute children’s show that consists of five adorable characters known as Whyatt, the Little Red Riding Hood, Pig, Princess Pia and Woofster. Whyatt is the leader who takes responsibility in vocabulary and carefully reads sentences. The Little Red Riding Hood has to power to rhyme each word. However, I will give great emphasis on one of the episodes called “The Ugly Duckling.” Through my observation, Princess Pia begins by stating the problem she has in her ballerina class “I want to twirl, but I can’t, I keep falling down” (Super Why Official, 2016). The superheroes choose the book called “The Ugly Duckling” because it most closely relates to Princess Pia’s problem of not being able to twirl. “The Ugly Duckling” talks about a duck that has difficulties learning how to swim like other ducks, but with the help of the superheroes, he was able to keep trying and achieve this goal. Moreover, the superheroes use their super powers as a strategy to help children think more critically. They begin to read the book and Wyatt uses his super power to highlight words in each sentence. Then, Pig uses his alphabet toolbox to find the duck in the fairytale story by spelling out the word “duck” and singing the alphabet song. As they progress through the story, the children are asked to help them find letters throughout, so they can achieve the super story answer. Since the duckling, has trouble swimming Princess Pia helps creates words by sounding and asking children what makes the word “kick.” However, since the books storyline is that the duck “floats, kicks, and quits,” Wyatt brings his power and helps change the word “quit” to “glide.” By completing the super letters, they discover the words “keep trying” which enable the duckling to learn how to swim as well as Princess Pia to learn how to twirl.
