I. Theme I will be observing the people surrounding the sport of surfing in Huntington Beach, CA. Surfing, as defined by Oxford English Dictionary, “is to stand or lie on a surfboard and ride on a wave toward the shore”. My general theme is exploring surfing culture. Within that theme, I will be exploring the behavior and social interaction in surfers. Likewise, I will be looking at what influences surfers have among the beach community. Lastly, I hope to investigate unspoken rules and etiquette among surfers. My field site will be in Huntington Beach Pier and Bolsa Chica State Beach. Both locations are in Huntington Beach, also known as Surf City. Huntington Beach Pier is home to the The U.S. Open of Surfing, the largest surfing competition held every summer. For this reason, …show more content…
Surfing is only prominent among areas close to the ocean, thus it is important that the physical environment be near a beach. In order to properly observe surf culture, one must go to a physical environment that has a lot of surfers. For example, Huntington Beach is a seaside city that has numerous beaches and long sunny days. It doesn't typically have the biggest waves, but does have the most consistent waves around. The Pier is a busy landmark that has many restaurants and surf shops. This environment attracts surfers who enjoy a warm environment, consistent waves and convenient location. Both places I will be observing are often busy, thus we can suspect that this attracts surfers who are comfortable with many people around them. Since my research is in Southern California, I can assume that the sunny environment will also have an influence on the activity and behavior. Southern California beach culture was popularized decades ago as being a youthful and blonde. While it is not as prominent as before, this beach image in the environment may still have some impact on the type of surfers we might see.

In Roxane Gay’s article “Why the Beach Is a Bummer” she explains her outlook on the beach and why it’s a place of discomfort rather than fun. “This is an ideal beach of hot sun, warm sand, crystal-clear water that leaves your skin salted. But it is all too often a mirage”(Gay) the beach isn’t always a place for everyone, and the expectations of the beach often leave people let down or disappointed. As much as I do love the beach and enjoy laying in the sun I agree with Gay’s perspective of the beach to an extent.…

    a) Another example of how humans have impacted the stimulus coastal environment is urban development of the coastline. The increased amount of people living near the coast has resulted in more residential construction along the coast and the development of sand dunes for 'prime' real estate and recreational purposes. This has had devastating effects on Australia’s coastline including the damaging effects on the sand dunes that protect the inland areas during times of high energy storms. The construction of buildings, including the marina in the stimulus photo, on top of sand dunes has also seen the increase in the rate of erosion and the loss of sand at several beaches. The marina and breakwater in the stimulus photo also clearly shows the…

Let me just clear the air before I start, I am a big man and by no means have I ever surfed or ever dreamed of surfing but it has always fascinated me in different ways. You may be asking yourself as to why I am writing about a surf apparel company that is centered around surf and beach life if I have no real interest in surfing besides the fact that only fit people can do it, and I can't. The reason why I chose this topic is not only the fact that a surfer bum hit it “big” but also the fact that Ron Dimenna achieved a long time goal by hard work and perseverance. I will also be briefly explaining the history behind the “World's Most Famous Surf Shop”.…

Stedman examines the surfing subculture of Australia and acknowledges the changes that have been made in the process of post modernisation and how specifically these changes have impacted on women. The methodology Stedman employed for this case study was varied and included analysis of text and image in surfing magazines and surf books, analysis of surf films, analysis of the surfboard as an object and through her own personal experience as a surfer interacting with and observing other surfers. Stedman concludes that the process of post modernisation has not created gender equality for women. I am interested in this article as is focuses directly on women’s status in modern surfing subculture.…
