Suspense In Frankenstein

What is horror? Horror is a type of extreme feeling of being afraid, disturbed and disgusted by something or a intense feeling of fear and shock. I believe that Frankenstein was written as a horror story, but when compared to all scary movies today by our standards today the movie is not really what we think as scary. Back when the movie Frankenstein was originally created horror was not to the full potential as it is today so then it was a extremely scary movie. Mary Shelly’s novel is mostly one that involves horrific ideas and the unthinkable and practically impossible in that time period. Humans creating life is creepy and horrific and shocking just the thought of humans creating humans is bothering. Frankenstein’s creature makes us want to like him and trust him but as time goes on it reveals reason why he commits the crimes that he does. It shows us that we often make our own problems and fears. All horror things involve elements to make it a real horror such as music, lighting effects, camera angles and suspense that adds up to the big scare that the director aims for. In the movie Frankenstein, Mary Shelly uses fear, surprise and suspense. Only elements missing are mystery and spoiler. There is fear and suspense when Frankenstein comes to life not knowing what his intentions are with humans and earth and how he will react to life. Everyone was surprised when Frankenstein killed Elizabeth just to find out he wanted her all to himself. Frankenstein was abandoned from his maker and he has to move on and find his way himself and act “normal”. Frankenstein was using horrific ideas to find his way to get around.
