Swarthmore Honors Program

Along with the rigour of the curriculum, I am impressed and drawn to the non-competitive culture at Swarthmore. In the type of place where competition is often high, the ability to remain supportive is important. I believe this is the kind of atmosphere that would benefit both my peers and me as we help each other reach our highest potential. Although at times competition is necessary for growth and motivation, the ability to work together enables us to move more smoothly towards our goals. I have also heard that intelligent conversations continue beyond classroom walls. Whether they are scientific, political and nerdy or geeky in any way, I can see myself sitting down with a cup of hot chocolate in one of the dorm rooms, engaging in those types of conversations. …show more content…
The program is one that I hope to be a part of as it would be an opportunity for me to do independent research, share my ideas with peers and vice versa, and receive the support I need to succeed by working closely with teachers. I believe I can bring a unique perspective to Swarthmore and I look forward to a challenging yet fulfilling next four

I think of myself a good candidate to partake in this program as I’m in all honors classes for my school plus my four magnet classes, and my one Ap class of World history. With all these classes I’ve accomplished staying in my school top grade of Principal List for 90 above all classes per marking period. While also being a student-athlete, I’ll swim 2 and a half hour a day after school. Regardless of the homework given or test I’d find the time to accomplish it all, and get the grade to prove it. These are all things I want to do, things I've wanted always get my 100 % effort.…

I have been a Xavier University Smooth Transition (ST) mentor for 3 years since the years of 2014-2016. Smooth Transition is a first-year student summer pre-orientation and year-long peer mentoring program that seeks to support underrepresented domestic and help them transition smoothly to college. Most smooth Transition students are often African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans. Being a smooth transition requires selflessness as the program unpaid and requires one to dedicate their time to helping another student, as most of the time, the smooth mentors can be the only one that the student can depend on. As a mentor, I have guided first-year students to make good decisions in their college years to succeed in the…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

At school, participating in extracurricular activities, such as sports/clubs, and actively working to improve my academics, such as getting involved in our schools TMSCA (science/math) team, is very critical to me. They not only enhance my educational standpoint but my leadership skills as well. This is why I believe I will be a great contribution to this program. I am always trying to do my finest job to any project I engage in, whether it is something as simple as writing a paper or a task as difficult as my last class project worth an enormous amount of my grade. I am always willing to broaden my horizons with things unexpected and constantly continue to bloom, for I never want my education to end.…

When I first arrived at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I expected higher education to be a bastion for peoples to freely express themselves, providing the ability for both students and faculty to openly interact and engage with their peers regarding a multitude of subjects. Yet this feeling dramatically changed with time. During my sophomore year, I saw the campus’ College Republicans falsely label the school as anti-free expression due to a funding dispute between the group and student government. Instead of debating the value of bringing in various perspectives to campus, the conversation focused around showcasing a conservative perspective in an arena the College Republicans found as threatening.…

"Getting Ahead of the Disruption” Peaceful Setting College, although a private institution, shared aspects of political influence. The college is located in a small college-centric town in a Mid-Western US state with an impression and expectation of academic excellence and higher learning. The college benefited from a substantial endowment that provided them the financial resources to see the institution through difficult financial times (Manning, 2013). Although the college was not in a current crisis, administrators were concerned the current financial and educational model may no longer be supportable. In an effort to bring change to keep the college financially an educationally viable, the college began to explore innovative ways to approach the education they deliver now and in the future (Manning, 2013).…

WHY I WANT TO JOIN THE HONORS PROGRAM Alighting from a Boeing 747 jetliner on the JFK tarmac on Thursday evening, April 28, 2016, I walked into what could be called a new page in my life story—a new start. Knowing this, I vowed to keep this God given asset alive and growing with all my soul and might, and what better way to do this than to identify with people of like passion, people who will add to me.…
