Synthesis Essay: Is College for Everyone?
They say college opens an endless amount of doors for you but lately it seems as though they close more doors than open. Going to college is one of the most expensive things that an American citizen will pay for throughout their lifetime as paying student loans off takes years, even decades. As tuition rises, the economic standpoint of the United States is crippling and will cause an inevitable market crash with the $1.2 trillion owed in student loans. Not only is college unaffordable but somewhat unnecessary. "I don't know how many acquaintances of mine have graduated from college with a "business' or "criminal justice" degree and absolutely no idea how to get a job with it." Source F. This quote adds by describing the state that colleges leave students in.
Some would say that claiming "college isn't for everyone" is a cheap cop out that is used by anyone that isn't smart enough for college. As someone who strongly disagrees, I would like to point out the flaws in this counter argument. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, anyone who goes straight into the workforce after high school will come to earn more than the average college graduate and any college graduate with 5 years of experience in their field of work. Higher education calls for a decent amount of understanding and high tuition fee's. Any minority or low-income student is at a huge disadvantage since they believe they have to put themselves in tons of debt in order to get out of their situation. This debt carries on from generation to generation and creates a vicious cycle, all because society portrays college as a basic need. This idea of making college seem like a golden key to success is absurd and only does everyone
