When giving a firearm to any individual they must first follow local, state, and federal laws. However, we are not talking about individuals. We are talking about arming the professors and staff. This is not just an individual who will procures a firearm. They will be taking the firearm to school with the purpose of protecting the students from armed gunmen, who enter the school with the intent of harming the students. Among the many issues that present themselves when trying to arm school staff and faculty, is the type of training that they must undergo. This firearm should be easy to conceal on the teacher’s person, but also effective enough to stop a shooter. The ideal weapon for teachers would be the M11 Pistol. According to the Department of the Army in (FM) Field Manuel 3-25.35, Combat Training with Pistols, M9 and M11. It gives detailed information on the M11 and what type of ammunition are used. In Section 1-1 we are given the dimensions of the M11: 7.08 inches long, 5.35 inches High, 1.46 inches wide, and weights 1.8lb. This means that the weapon could be easily hidden on user’s waist line. In addition, the M11 has built in safety. Again, in Section 1-1 of FM 3-25.35, it states that the M11 have a decoking lever and automatic firing lock. The purpose of these are to ensure that the weapons dose not accidentally misfire, it also ensures that the weapon stops firing if there is a malfunction. The type of ammunition is 9MM. The M11 can shoot the 9MM up to 54.7 Yards with effectiveness, according to FM 3-25.35. However, where is this weapon going to come from? Will the state issue it out to every teacher in the state? Or will the teachers be forced to buy their own weapon?
In conclusion, letting teachers carry firearms will be very difficult because of the regulations found in the training manual of Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Which states that the permit holder has to requalify twice a year, four months apart from each other. Making it strenuous to say the least for teacher to set appointments and schedule classes at the same time. In addition, there are still too many unanswered questions that the government must answer if they are going to tell teachers carry
