I enjoyed reading your post which reminded me of times in nursing school when I had my clinicals in teenage and child psychiatry units. Working in a psychiatric unit takes a lot of courage and determination. Patients sense if their caregivers have passion for them. It is nearly impossible to fake compassion and empathy when serving people with special needs. As you pointed out in your question, an answer that “I do not really want to be a psychiatry nurse” is not satisfactory for this position. A nurse should absolutely have a compassionate heart for patients who struggle with mental health disorders if he/she wants to receive the position and retain it.
