In the article, “Obviously Sports Do Not Build Character” by Anthony B. Bradley, the author states, “Why are so many professional athletes, who have spent their entire lives in organized sports, masters at cheating, serial adultery, drunkenness, compulsive gambling, drug abuse, and thuggish fighting?… Increasing ticket sales, advertising revenue and winning, by any means necessary, are more important in professional sports than the character of those athletes we cultivate to get there.” This quote proves that athletes care more about other things than character when they get to the professional level. This supports the opposing claim because it proves that participating in team sports does not build character. Although, I still think that this still does not disprove that children learn and develop character during their youth. Also in the article, it states, “Michael Vick is only the latest and most sensational example. Vick has possibly ruined his career after pleading guilty to federal dog fighting conspiracy charges…. By the time many young athletes become “professionals”, they have already adopted the dissolute values learned in the company of malformed adults.” This quote proves that many professional athletes throw away their careers by making stupid decisions and not showing character. This supports the opposing claim because it proves that team sports do not build character. These evidence examples support the claim that participating in team sports does not help to build character, but I still strongly disagree and think these evidence examples are only the case in some
