The way Tennessee became a state is truly surprising. It came to statehood on June 1, 1796, with the help of North Carolina of course. “Land grant acts passed in North Carolina created a booming market in Tennessee land before actual settlers had ever arrived” (“From Territory to Statehood”). North Carolina helped put this state on the map and did not even fully know it yet. The reason for its nickname was because during Mexican-American war, we had volunteer soldiers and took home a victory, leading us to be given the name of the “Volunteer State”.
