It is known as the number one nation where a person can freely marry and practice their religious beliefs without the worry of being under attack or suffer scrutiny. As our founding fathers wrote on the declaration of independence, all men are created equal and are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In our democracy, we as the people are entitled to alter, abolish, or institute a new government if these rights aren’t secured. Even though it seems like the perfect place to live, it is not a worldly opinion.…

In the Blink written by Malcolm Gladwell creates very fascinating terminologies to describe "triggers which influence our behavior without our awareness of such changes". One of the terms that he uses in a Blink is "Priming". Malcolm Gladwell describes this word by scattering the words in test relating to older people like "worried," "Florida," "old," "lonely," "gray," "bingo," and "wrinkle" to make participants adaptive unconscious think about the state of being old. Priming brings the old thoughts to the surface of subconsciousness to make the thoughts more accessible than the less accessible thoughts. Through conversations with people in Pakistan I was primed incorrectly related my experience in America which caused misconceptions.…

Democracy for Sale Five years ago Citizens United spearheaded a campaign to steal the people's power and unfortunately the Supreme Court decided to rule in favor of the controversial right-wing group, in the devastating ruling of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. This disastrous move by the "Supreme Court scrapped the previous campaign finance laws and essentially declared that companies are allowed to buy politicians by circumventing restrictions via PACs, political action committees" (Tedford), thus stealing the power of the masses and giving our power to those whose bank accounts resemble that of a country's population. Sadly, the affluent 1% of Americans hold more power than the other 99% of this nation because of the current government's pay to win democracy. Without any…

While some may believe that a reversal to a government more in line with 18th century America would be beneficial, I think that we would come to the same conclusion they did: there needs to be a central leading, unbiased and unifying branch in the government. By having an executive branch of government at the federal level, the state and local levels have more time and resources available to focus on the daily life of their citizens. The loss of that executive branch would cause disarray at every other level of government. And that result would be magnified 50 times, as it would be happening at the same time in every state.…

My life was changed forever when I decided to go with a group from my church on a mission trip to host a bible school in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti. I had been warned prior to going that it would change my life in a drastic way, but no one could have prepared me for the amount of brokenness and heartbreak I would witness. Flying into Port au Prince, even from the air I could see that the homes were dilapidated, and the ones that weren’t, were pretty close to falling apart. I could see trash and pollution in the ocean and piled up on the land, and debris still left over from the earthquake that happened in 2010. Landing in the airport was nerve-wracking.…

I would spend my one million dollars in three very distinct and controversial ways. I would portion the money out to be donated to three different causes. My number one cause is factory jobs going to other countries, which is going to receive six hundred thousand. Second, homelessness would be nonexistent due to people having more jobs and my donation of three hundred thousand. Lastly, the income gap between the rich and poor would be substantially lower and the middle class population would increase dramatically due to more job opportunities in the United States of America and the final donation of my million dollars of one thousand dollars.…

The wealth gap in the United States, while staggering, did not strike me as completely unexpected. It is, however, an issue that is a problem for our culture; the distribution of wealth causes other problems, such as deviance, to rise. Though there are many schools of thought regarding wealth distribution and income caps, adequately addressing the basic needs of society will most likely produce the most significant impact. In discussing this with my family and friends, I found that many of them frowned upon the redistribution of wealth, citing socialism, communism, and any number of ‘-isms’ that have been brought up as alternatives to capitalist society.…

    Should The Rich Be Taxed

The people who support raising taxes on the rich think that the government just needs more funding to be able to do all the projects the government wants to have accomplished. “Further, Mr. Obama wants to raise taxes on the "rich," believing that we need more revenue for his projects” (Kleist). They believe that the government needs more money to spend on important projects. Taxing the rich would bring in more revenue for the government to spend; however, it is how they spend it that matters. The key to being able to fund these projects is not raising taxes on the rich; instead, it is learning how to spend the money that the government does make from taxes efficiently.…
