The Mon were immediately overpowered. This was during the 11th century. The Khmer, who now controlled the area, adapted Indian customs from those original people. Then, in 1238, a kingdom in Thailand stopped paying their tribute to the Khmer Empire. This kingdom was called the Sukhothai. They threw the Khmer out of their land.
