In both A Streetcar Named Desire and The Awakening, Blanche and Edna went on their own journeys. Blanche travelled from Mississippi to New Orleans and Edna from New Orleans to Grand Isle. Despite this, Edna and Blanche still make decisions in their favor no matter if it benefits them or not. While I enjoyed both stories, I relate to Edna’s desire to find who she truly is, even if it means going against societies standards. I admire that she was willing to sacrifice everything to make herself happy. Women are held to a certain standard and if they do not mold themselves to fit that standard, they are judged. Edna’s suicide is seen as controversial; some believe it is a triumphant act while others believe it is a foolish surrender. I see it as Edna taking control of her life one last time. This story influences me to live my life in a way that makes me happy, even if it goes against societal
