Classroom Setting
One of the first things I noticed when walking into Mrs. Curl’s classroom was how pleasant a place it was. Not only was it clean, neat, organized, and colorful, but it also possessed a fun, child-friendly element that made it look like a place any kid would enjoy spending long periods of time in. Mrs. Curl would play music softly in the background at the beginning of her class when the children were doing educational busy-word to keep them occupied until everyone arrived and she was ready to begin the lessons. This improved the atmosphere tremendously as the music was, at times, soothing and at other times fun, kid-friendly tunes that got the kids excited and happy. Curl’s room were creative, informative, and very aesthetically pleasing. She had a bullitine board for nearly every subject covered in her class including one for math, english, and science. The math board explained both addition and subtraction and in the middle of the board were two alligators with their mouths open in order to explain the concept of greater than, less than, and equal to. The science bullitine board included facts about the weather since that is what they had been disucssing so far. The english bullitine board included a chart of all the letters of the alphabet as well as one explaining the writing process. It also sported sentences and illustrations created by the students, allowing them to be involved in the bullitine …show more content…
Curl’s lessons were highly interactive and ensured that the students were involved as much as they possibly could be. Sometimes she would read to them from her book and then they had to all read the same sentence back to her from their books. This is called echo reading, which is “a method of modeling oral reading in which the teacher reads a line of a story and then the students echo by reading the same line back.”(p.g. 227). Sometimes she would show them a new concept using the smart board and she would call on students to come up to the smart board and draw in or select the correct answer. Sometimes when Mrs. Curl was busy, she would put on an educational youtube video that taught the kids something valuable through a song. These videos were agreat idea because it got the kids up out of their seats, it got their energy out, but it also helped them memorize how to count by five, how to count two one-hundred, and things of that nature through lyrics they could easily memorize.
