Crisis intervention is notably emergency psychological aid targeted at assisting individuals facing a crisis situation to restore psychological equilibrium to their biopsychosocial functioning and to potentially reduce risk of psychological trauma.
There are many characteristics to a crisis. One of them is that a crisis is characterised by presence of both opportunity and danger. Danger can arise when a person is overwhelmed by crisis leading them to a potential lethality of suicide. There can be presence of an opportunity provided if self-realization and self-growth occurs when the individual’s receive help. Most importantly well-honed and accurate listening skills. The first of five skills would be asking open-ended questons.Often crisis workers face frustration caused by client’s lack of response and enthusiasm. Open-ended question help in encouraging clients to respond with completed fuller statements at deeper levels of meaning. Open-ended questions usually begin with what/how asking for clarification of details and used to explore feelings, thoughts and behaviours. The second skill would be restatement and summary clarification. This skill is effective and essential in crisis intervention.by Restating something from client is crisis workers own words, the worker can gain agreement on what the client I trying to say, think, do and feel and also act as a breaking point for client whom is experiencing freewheeling of thoughts and emotions. Third skill would be conveying understanding. Individuals facing crisis usually feel that no one understands what they are going through. Even though we might not understand the exact feeling of what they are going through conveying statements like ‘I understand’ helps the client feel understood by someone.it is essential to repeat this statements through the process as the client may not have heard it the first time due to agitation and not being in touch with reality. These are empathy, genuiness and acceptance (Rogers ,1977).these conditions are critical in performing effective crisis intervention. Empathy means that the crisis worker is able to accurately sense the inner feelings and meanings the client may be experiencing and it also communicates directly to the client that the interventionist understands how it feels to be a client. The first example of empathy would be a form of sympathy meaning to make a reflective deep response that grabs the clients feelings. Example would be saying something like ‘that is terrible! no one should do such a thing to you! Poor soul! I would inform the authorities if I could right now!”. The second example would be attending. This skill is solely focused on watching, acting and portraying attentiveness.an example would be observing behaviour, appearance and leaning forward to the client to show they are being attentive to the client. The third example would be to verbally communicate empathetic understanding. This means to actively listen and try to understand the deeper feelings of the client.an example would be to simply state something like “it seems lie your feeling a sense of annoyance with the constant let downs by your husband that may be in fact affecting your overall well-being!”.
