It is a type of anemia where you don’t make “enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout body”(Sorrell). The blood cells are also misshapen they look ridged and crescent mooned shaped; because of this there “ cells can get stuck in small blood vessels, which then slows or blocks blood flow and oxygen to parts of the body” (Sorrell). How does someone get Sickle Cell Anemia? “Sickle cell anemia is an inheritable disease” (Sickle Cell Anemia can be Deadly). You can get this disease by both of your parents having the gene for sickle cell. You “inherit two copies of the gene” (Sickle Cell Anemia can be Deadly). If you only inherit it from one parent then you have the sickle cell trait.
What is Sickle cell Trait? Sickle Cell Trait is when you only inherit one sickle cell gene from one of your parents. You can have a blood test done to see if you have the sickle cell trait. If you just have the trait then you won’t have to undergo treatment; although sometimes you can have serious health problems because of having the trait (Sickle Cell trait). These serious health problems will occur under intense exercise, overheating, or high altitudes (Sickle Cell trait). In some colleges they test football players to see if you have the sickle cell trait because several deaths occurred in relation to exertional rhabdomyolysis which is associated to having the sickle cell trait …show more content…
Some symptoms in children with sickle cell would be painful swelling of the hands and feet, fatigue from anemia, jaundice and icteris (What Are The Signs). Symptoms in older patients include: a strike of pain in the abdomen, chest, lower back form temperature change, stress, dehydration, or illness; servere anemia, shortness of breath, feel dizzy, rapid breathing, fever, chest pain; loss of balance, server headaches caused by brain complications; kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems; and can cause bacterial infections like meningococcus, pneumococcus, chlamydia, blood, lung,and bone infections (What Are The Signs). These are just some of the major things that Sickle Cell Anemia can
