Determination is one of the main keys to undertaking a mission. The characters, Farah Ahmedi, Walt Masters, and Buck prove that it is, despite all the struggles and difficulties. Farah Ahmedi, who wrote "Escape from Afghanistan", undertook the mission of getting out of Afghanistan because of the war. Walt Masters, from "The King of Mazy May", mission was to protect Loren Hall's claim from claim jumpers. Buck, from "The Call of the Wild", undertook the mission of defeating Spitz and becoming the lead dog. However, all three were undertaking their mission because of their determination.
Farah Ahmedi had determination to complete her mission because her country was war-torn. For example, “Perhaps my mother’s problems …show more content…
According to the passage, “He did not dare to think what would happen if they caught him; he only clung to the sled, his heart beating wildly, and watched the snow-rim of the bank above him”(London 22). This relates to determination because he didn’t even think about what would happen if anything happened he just wanted to help so he went and warned Hall. Walt was also nervous even though he was determined because he just held on and didn’t stop to think about what could go wrong. Additionally, “ . . . swearing at the boy and threatening all kinds of terrible things if he did not stop the dogs; but Walt cracked him sharply across the knuckles with the butt of the dog-whip till he let go”(London 23). This proves that Walt was determined because he didn’t stop or get scared but he just kept hitting him with the butt of the whip until he let go. He was determined because some people may have gotten scared and stopped the sled and not completed the mission, but Walt did. The speaker states, " ”Halt!" they cried after him. "Stop, or we'll shoot!" But Walt only yelled the harder at the dogs, and dashed round the bend with a couple of revolver bullets singing after him(London 26/27). This situation shows that Walt is determined because he doesn’t even stop when they start shooting at him with a revolver, most people would have surrendered, but Walt …show more content…
For instance, “The time had come, and Buck knew that either he or Spitz must die”(London pg 10[pdf]). This shows Buck was determined because he knew this was going to happen and he was preparing for it, it wasn’t like it had just come up that instant. The text states, “A second later the waiting pack was on top of him, and Spitz had disappeared. Buck stood and watched. The wild animal had made its kill”(London pg 10-11[pdf]). This proves that Buck was determined because this scene from the book shows that Buck has just defeated Spitz. It also shows he was determined because Buck just stood and watched he still wasn’t done with his mission, he had to get his rightful place in the traces. According to the passage, “'Look at Buck!' said Francois, laughing. 'He's killed Spitz, and now he wants to be leaddog. Go away, Buck!' He pulled Buck away and tried to harness Sol-leks again. Sol-leks was unhappy too. He was frightened of Buck, and when Francois turned his back, Buck took Sol-leks' place again”(London pg 11[pdf]). Therefore, Buck was determined because he kept taking Sol-leks’ place over and over again no matter what Francois said. He was also determined because he had made many of the dogs afraid of what he could do and get when he defeated
