The Renaissance artists in the northern Europe had some technically advanced breakthroughs with their technique and medium: Oil paint. In the major Flemish cities of the north the streets were bustling with activity and a new bourgeois people. These people were not rich aristocracy born into wealth but merchants who had earned a living, this growing class of people wanted to have paneled art pieces to hang in their homes.
