Throughout the film the girls working at Runway obsess over dieting in order to maintain their petite figure so they’re able to fit the latest fashion trends and appease their boss. The girl Andie, portrayed by Anne Hathaway receives multiple digs about being a size six, which is considered fat. She is criticized for eating carbs and not conforming to her atmosphere. Although the film is meant to patronize the obsession with female appearance, it doesn 't change the fact that it is portraying reality. The message sent is regardless of a woman 's education or work ability, her appearance takes president.
Although the film represent the growing issue of constant criticism for woman 's appearance, it does depict strong female roles. Far to few film showcase woman in a position of power or seeking a great goal in life than landing prince charming. The Devil Wears Prada focuses on strong female roles and their ability to overcome obstacles in male dominated corporate settings; The film easily passes a simple three question exam created by cartoonist Alex Bechdel to shed light on female importance in film.
