Fugui's mom does her best to keep a loving and respectful relationship with her son even when he makes poor choices. Through the words “work with me” Hua creates a loving tone as Fugui's mother is taking time to help her son support their family. His mother spends time with him as they work and that time is important to her and Fugui. She can spend her time with her family and help support them at the same time. Next, while contemplating accepting money from his wife, Fugui states, “Mother’s health made me worry more”(57). Hua develops an anxious tone through the words “worry more” and illustrates the desperate situation Fugui is in. By taking money from his wife and getting a doctor, he could prolong his mother’s life. He could then continue to strengthen his relationship with his mom. Finally, Fugui states, “When she died she didn't even know where I was”(82).
