I love working with this population versus a high school population because they are completely different, even if they are the same sage, they are not the same. It a different conversation and I think that working with teens in a substance abuse center, especially girls, I think it 's really impactful too since I am a female and I do share some, not personal information, but I tell them that I could have easily been in this situation, about the decisions that they make.
A lot of times, people tell me that they will miss you and completely changed my idea of what sex education looks like. Because when they think about sex education, they think it 's like what they see on TV and that you 're basically going to die or some old lady teaching you. So, I think that is a big thing within this population, you have to be relatable and I love working with them because they are funny and their lives are insane and the things that they have had to go through.
Interviewer: So, I want to make sure that I 'm hearing you clearly, so, kind of thinking about the curriculum, do you see it having an impact in relational piece is still not written in and you really go out of your way to make that …show more content…
Interviewer 2: And kind of related to that, you talked about different group dynamics; I don’t know if you have any comments about?
Interviewee: I don’t know because I do mix gender groups too, like ACH is mixed gendered. It might be beneficial for these girls, I 'm not sure. I know with ACH it 's beneficial because they are able to debate with each other or talk about it and be able to hear specifically, I remember the last group I did with ACH, one of the boys was like, and what if the girl doesn’t want to use condoms? He was saying that he had been in that situation.
So, I think for females here, that guys are put in that situation too and that they are allowed to walk away, I think it makes it a better conversation. Even with the eighth graders, its mixed gender and we won 't let them split them us because we want them to know that it 's always the same conversation. I don’t know how it would affect the ones here, because Raul at Dallas County has mixed gender too. Sometimes, it 's all boys and one girl. That is something that I guess you would have to ask them because I 'm not
