Modern artists were the first to develop collage art, assemblage, mobiles, some photography and much more. Assemblages were created out of everyday items, found items. He is literally talking to you as he puts each and every mark down onto the canvas. With the layers from the oil paint and the wax crayon, the viewer gets the sense of action taken. The action of deciding where to put the wax crayon and then the placement and reduction of the graphite are adamant throughout the canvas. Twombly is literally showing the viewer his mistakes, decisions, and actions he must take to create Untitled (Bolsena).
Anselm Kiefer’s, Breaking of the Vessels, is a huge bookshelf full of books that have been shattered that project sheets of lead that have been oxidized onto the floor around. The whole mass of the weight pulls the material down. This introduces a sense of historical and mystical sense to the viewer. The breakage signifies the addition of evil and the human sense into the world. Untitled (Bolsena) also evokes the mythological feeling. The whole meaning of the piece is a complex one, and purposeful at that
