Counseling Methods: A Case Study Essay

Introduction In this study the effectiveness of counseling methods was tested in a group of 20 middle and high school students at an alternative school. These students from a Southeastern metropolitan area were selected as a direct result of their inability to appropriately interact with peers and staff in their home school. This study classifies fights as; arguments, and or physical acts of aggression towards staff or other students. The study analyzed males and females between the ages of 16.4 to 17.8; splitting the group into two separate parts. In addition the paper presents results from two counseling methods; psychoanalysis (PSY) and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
Scales of Measurement The scores are arranged in a manner which was disorganized for me to study so I rearranged them using a frequency distribution allowing me to glance and discern what data was needed at particular times during my research (Larson & Farber, 2009). While reviewing the data, no extreme gap or outliers in the number of fights and/or stress level were noticed (Larson & Farber, 2009). The number of fights ranged from a high of 18 to a low of 7; and stress level ranged from 9 5 down to 82. After four weeks of interventions the scores of the group dropped slightly for the stress levels and more significantly for the number of fights. After the intervention the mean for the fights was cut in half down to 6; while, the stress level of the group only dropped slightly to a mean of 83. After the intervention still no extreme gap in the number of fights or stress levels were notices, as the number of fights ranged from 7 to 3, with a stress level ranging from 92 to 68 (Drummond & Jones,
