There are many individuals who fight for those who cannot fend for themselves; Army men, lawyers, and even people in day-to-day life take a stand alongside these otherwise defenseless people. More often than not, those who do choose to take this occasionally dangerous stance receive the blunt of the opposition in a variety of harmful ways. The amount of maturity and kindness from these defenders however, far exceeds and pales any physical or mental damage that can possibly occur to themselves when protecting the individuals they stand for. The minority of people who put themselves in harm 's way to protect the smaller people in society are oftentimes made into new versions of themselves after these harsh experiences. The damage done by helplessness can damage one further than pain and fatigue. Some may say a victim 's agony is, "...as simple as black and white" (Lee, 203), but the destructive power of these experiences is much more severe. The "...disgust in [a man 's] eyes..." (Pacheco, 135) goes beyond than discomfort or grief alone: the torture from loneliness is a struggle that is always present. This strain and distraught emotion of agony can be remedied, or ignored, but never deposed of completely until the source is gone; and the source will never be dispelled until the weak become powerful, or until the abusers become weak themselves. Although being powerless and a sense of feeling alone has effected many on a case to case basis, these emotions have resonated in the course of human societies. Throughout history, the defense of minorities has led to said minorities being able to "...have right... to own land" (Hughes, 8), displaying the utmost importance and impact a few moral actions can have.
