Many people kill themselves as a result of PTSD as they cannot handle reliving the event over and over. People may experience these symptoms after the accident for a short amount of time but, if it continues to persist for a long period of time it may be PTSD and they should seek medical attention from a professional before it continues to worsen and impacts their lives greatly. PTSD may occur weeks, months, or even years after the event occurred, many things can bring the event back into light and make the disorder come out. Many people turn to substance abuse to try and cope with their disorder; obviously it does not help and can make the symptoms worse. A simple google search for counselling in the area will give people, many different options on where they can search help for their PTSD. A doctor’s visit is also a very good option as medicine might be something needed to treat the illness; the doctor will also be able to guide people in the right direction for a counselor. There are also support groups in many communities that offer help. PTSD is not something to feel shame about, a lot of time family or friends suggest people should “just get over it” but PTSD is not something you can just get over, it takes time, a lot of work, and sometimes counselling or medication .Seeking support from family, friends, life partners, or people of trust are also very important to do; they can usually provide some sort of support to get through the illness with you. There are also apps available on your cell phone such as PTSD Coach Canada as well as many online resources to help you destress. There are also videos that have a calming mechanism such as breathing gifs that you can sync your breathing with to put you in a calm state if you start to go through any of them symptoms of PTSD; it is a good way to put focus on something else other than the flashbacks or whichever symptom you may be going through.
