The Humorous Furries
The furry fandom is the subculture I am studying. Furry fandom is a subculture that enjoys fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. These characters exhibit human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothing. The subculture includes the artists, writers, illustrators, role players, puppeteers, and fans of furries who meet and converse in groups on the internet and gather at conventions. They are an expansive community with smaller groups that have a majority of similarities but with some varying differences. The aspect of the community that I’ll be focusing on is the fursuiters (individuals who wear full body animal suits)

they joke around during them all. For instance during the “Rainfurrest” convention dodge ball game in 2014, a bobcat crawled to the sidelines after he got hit by the ball then reached out for help in dramatic fashion like in military movies. The wolf referee was hiding behind a dog furry as a human shield because he was targeted too while three of the referees were tied together with police tape acting like NWO “New World Order”. Even during the music videos they remake as furry versions, they clown around during or after the video, for instance when they remade the “I finally found you” video in furry format, at the end everyone was supposed to hold still for an effect shot and the director “Duke” ruins the shot by jumping with a loud roar rather than sitting with the otter or panther on his lap. After the dance competition “Enter the Arena” at the 20th Eurofurence , lion girl known as “Belo4ka” or “Sofia” danced and made the dog fursuit judge stare with his mouth open holding his glasses up over his eyes pretending to drool. After he stopped and it was his turn to talk, he panted into the microphone and when he was saying his bit about her dance he said “when I watched you dance; you made me question my sexuality” everyone …show more content…
There was a heavyset man dressed as an old lion being followed by a dog playing the tuba mimicking a joke from the show Family Guy. One night at the Midwest Furfest there was a zombie fursuit that scared some fursuiters as he mocked biting them on the neck and wondered around like a zombie proving that some individual’s idea of humor isn’t always the same as the masses. At Anthrocon there was a border collie fursuit repeatedly saying ‘Hi’ to the camera, then a coyote came up and closed his muzzle, he let go and dog says “Hi”, he closes it again then let go, the dog says “Per”, he closes his muzzle again then let go, the dog says “Yeah!” jumping around with hands in the air while the coyote turned to the camera with his hands in the same position they were in when he let go of the muzzle. The dog furry was definitely ‘hyper” and everyone laughed at their banter.
Being humorous and making jokes creates a friendly environment, assists in social interactions, and eases the tension for newcomers and people anxious about being different. Humor is one of the major building blocks in the foundation of the furry fandom culture. It is used in bonding friendships, building cohesiveness between members, filling the group with laughter and positive energy, and enhancing the group identity of being

A close study of the technique Drew Haden Taylor, the central character of “Pretty Like a White Boy”, and Joe, the central character of “Legless Joe Versus Black Robe”, respond to their encounters with problems they face almost everyday and use humor to reduce the pain their problems is causing them. Though the authors of “Pretty Like a White Boy” as well as “Legless Joe Versus Black Robe” have creative ways of crafting their work, these two writers expressed their similarities of humor usage in their characters, style and plot between their stories. Why is humour usage in novels important? Firstly, Humor usage is effective in writing because it helps shape reader’s understanding of the reading. Perhaps you’ve been disappointed by news coverage or even been angry with reporters. You might feel obligated to happily agree to the point of laughter with the way that reporters are portrayed in this video. However, it is a jump in logic. Just because you agree that reporters are frustrating people, it doesn’t support the idea that you should laugh. But whether or not it is being used well, the use of Pathos tends to work on most…

As more and more people have realized the importance of role that humor plays in changing the society, people start to use humor as a tool to express their opinions and it turns out to be a very effective method because the possibility of people being convinced is higher than regular speeches. In the clip A Totally Real, 100% Valid Theory | Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Samantha Bee uses humor to convince the audience the fact that Donald Trump can’t read. The use of theory of incongruence that Simon Critchley introduces can be found in her jokes. Also, her jokes follow the “benign violation” theory raised by Peter McGraw and Joel Warner which is the main reason of why her jokes are funny. This clip is effective because although everyone…

Socializing is not easy for every person for the reason that they suffer anxiety, depression, and other social issues therefore they have to make use of what works for them. Society, as a whole, is like a well-run clock. The combination of multiple different pieces, all with varying functions, all working together, and all serving unique roles produces a fantastically designed final product. Interestingly enough, our culture is analogous to the running of a time-keeping machine. Society also includes many different individuals who have personal beliefs and opinions, and each individual serves a vital purpose to the overall purpose of the group formed by these individuals. Alan de Botton, in his book Status Anxiety, argues that humorists are one of the most important individuals involved in our society, as they are able to deliver oftentimes controversial messages to their audiences.…

The furry fandom subculture dates back in the 1980’s where Steve Gallacci furry comic book, Albedo Anthropomorphics, led a science fiction discussion about anthropomorphic characters. This discussion has then led groups to meet up at science fiction conventions (Flayrah 2012). In present day, there are over 30 furry conventions globally, including Anthrocon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which is one of the largest convention in the world with over 6,000 participants.…

People in today’s society have adopted humor and comedies into their everyday lives, whether it’d be from shows such as Saturday Night Live or from a cartoon column in the newspaper. The success of these humorous selections comes from the entertainment value as well as the sheer value of laughter. Through these positive, light-hearted responses, viewers of humorous programs associate the authors of these comedies with harmless, beneficial motivations. Stephen Colbert relayed his thoughts during an interview, saying, “You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time.” Thus, de Botton’s view on the role of humorists is correct as it identifies humorists as effective messengers.…

The concept of humor is targeted around a person producing a comical statement or something that produces laughter and enjoyment to an audience. In the book titled Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton, the writer hypothesizes that the position of humor in society is to bring out repressed mind and messages that regular human beings can relate and apprehend without restriction from others. I trust that de Botton's stance toward humor having a vital role within the feature of society is true, because humor does indiscreetly permit people to freely vocalize and itemize information without the contraints of society on them, but additionally gives people greater awareness of the presence of wrongs in a society through making the observation surrounding…

Does comedy help promote social change? Ramon Lopez, Iain Ellis and the documentary Tickling Giants demonstrate how comedy has had some social change but has not had a positive impact on society nor promoted great social change. Ellis discusses about how The Talk Show brought about a change in society but not a positive change in which the comedian expected since the nation returned to where they started or even worse. While Lopez discuss how the comedian Jon Stewart does not promote positive social change but rather degrading change in society. I agree that comedy can have a social effect but disagree that comedians can bring about a positive change.…
