The furry fandom is the subculture I am studying. Furry fandom is a subculture that enjoys fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. These characters exhibit human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothing. The subculture includes the artists, writers, illustrators, role players, puppeteers, and fans of furries who meet and converse in groups on the internet and gather at conventions. They are an expansive community with smaller groups that have a majority of similarities but with some varying differences. The aspect of the community that I’ll be focusing on is the fursuiters (individuals who wear full body animal suits) …show more content…
they joke around during them all. For instance during the “Rainfurrest” convention dodge ball game in 2014, a bobcat crawled to the sidelines after he got hit by the ball then reached out for help in dramatic fashion like in military movies. The wolf referee was hiding behind a dog furry as a human shield because he was targeted too while three of the referees were tied together with police tape acting like NWO “New World Order”. Even during the music videos they remake as furry versions, they clown around during or after the video, for instance when they remade the “I finally found you” video in furry format, at the end everyone was supposed to hold still for an effect shot and the director “Duke” ruins the shot by jumping with a loud roar rather than sitting with the otter or panther on his lap. After the dance competition “Enter the Arena” at the 20th Eurofurence , lion girl known as “Belo4ka” or “Sofia” danced and made the dog fursuit judge stare with his mouth open holding his glasses up over his eyes pretending to drool. After he stopped and it was his turn to talk, he panted into the microphone and when he was saying his bit about her dance he said “when I watched you dance; you made me question my sexuality” everyone …show more content…
There was a heavyset man dressed as an old lion being followed by a dog playing the tuba mimicking a joke from the show Family Guy. One night at the Midwest Furfest there was a zombie fursuit that scared some fursuiters as he mocked biting them on the neck and wondered around like a zombie proving that some individual’s idea of humor isn’t always the same as the masses. At Anthrocon there was a border collie fursuit repeatedly saying ‘Hi’ to the camera, then a coyote came up and closed his muzzle, he let go and dog says “Hi”, he closes it again then let go, the dog says “Per”, he closes his muzzle again then let go, the dog says “Yeah!” jumping around with hands in the air while the coyote turned to the camera with his hands in the same position they were in when he let go of the muzzle. The dog furry was definitely ‘hyper” and everyone laughed at their banter.
Being humorous and making jokes creates a friendly environment, assists in social interactions, and eases the tension for newcomers and people anxious about being different. Humor is one of the major building blocks in the foundation of the furry fandom culture. It is used in bonding friendships, building cohesiveness between members, filling the group with laughter and positive energy, and enhancing the group identity of being
