“The Gift of Magi” is a story about two lovable couple sacrificed their important items for the true love. “The Necklace” is a story about a beautiful lady that wants jewelries to show off herself but ends up at a hard-working woman. Della from “The Gift of Magi” and Madame Loisel from “The Necklace” live in the similar conditions but they have different attitude towards their money, physical appearance, and husbands.
Madame Loisel is unsatisfied with her money, feels owed something because of her beauty, and feels her marriage is beneath herself. The author told the readers that “She suffered constantly, feeling that all the attributes of a gracious life, every luxury, should rightly have been hers.” (333) Madame Loisel feels painful that

From the passage, “Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only $1.87 with which to buy Jim a present. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result.” (261~262) Della doesn’t have enough money to buy a gift for Jim, her husband. She has been working so hard in the past few months, but she still cannot purchase something nice for her husband. The author told the readers that “‘Will you buy my hair?’ asked Della.” (263) Della sold her beautiful long hair for twenty dollars to get the money of the gift. She gave up her own beauty just to get a Christmas gift for her husband. Only true love can make someone willing to sacrifice their important value. In the passage, the author also shows that “But whenever Mr. James Dillingham Young came home and reached his flat above he was called "Jim" and greatly hugged by Mrs. James Dillingham Young, already introduced to you as Della. Which is all very good.” (261) The love between Della and Jim is true love. Even though they live in a poor situation, but they still love each others and willing to sacrifice their most important values for Christmas gifts. Jim didn’t make many money, but everyday when he gets home, Della always have this positive and loving attitude towards him. Della lives in a poor conditions but she still loves her husband and willing to give up her beauty.
