From the passage, “Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only $1.87 with which to buy Jim a present. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result.” (261~262) Della doesn’t have enough money to buy a gift for Jim, her husband. She has been working so hard in the past few months, but she still cannot purchase something nice for her husband. The author told the readers that “‘Will you buy my hair?’ asked Della.” (263) Della sold her beautiful long hair for twenty dollars to get the money of the gift. She gave up her own beauty just to get a Christmas gift for her husband. Only true love can make someone willing to sacrifice their important value. In the passage, the author also shows that “But whenever Mr. James Dillingham Young came home and reached his flat above he was called "Jim" and greatly hugged by Mrs. James Dillingham Young, already introduced to you as Della. Which is all very good.” (261) The love between Della and Jim is true love. Even though they live in a poor situation, but they still love each others and willing to sacrifice their most important values for Christmas gifts. Jim didn’t make many money, but everyday when he gets home, Della always have this positive and loving attitude towards him. Della lives in a poor conditions but she still loves her husband and willing to give up her beauty.
