The Glass Castle Movie Vs Book

The Glass Castle is a nonfiction book that was later turned into a movie. The book was written by Jeannette Walls, and the book is about her life. This story is a mostly about the family dynamic of a family who moves around quite often and where each member of the family has their own sets of difficulties. I think the book was turned into a movie for two reasons, one is that the book has parts that would not be super appropriate for younger readers, so they made it into a more of a kid friendly story. The second reason is that not everyone wants or has the time to read a book, it is much easier to see a movie trailer and then think I can spare two hours to go watch this movie. The movie kept the same name as the book, this was also probably …show more content…
In the book one of the most important aspects of Jeannette’s life was the social factor and how a social life works when you don’t stay in one place long enough to keep friends. Unfortunately the movie was lacking this component to the story which I think made the movie less interesting. Jeannette had been beaten up everyday on her way home for a while. This was never mentioned in the movie, If I was beat up it would have been a big part of my life and it is a important representation of how hard her social life was. Another social factor in Jeanette's life that was not mentioned in the movie was that everyday during lunch she would do homework so that people wouldn't notice that she did not have any food. This stuck me hard because When I used to not eat lunch I also did that, but it was a voluntary action that I was doing, but for Jeannette she had no choice. The movie did not talk much about her schooling life and how she was put in special education when she had a different accent. These parts of the book were important to get connected to the character and understand actually how hard her life was and how she never got a break. Last but …show more content…
First of all Rosemary, Jeannette’s mom, did not do anything to try and stop Rex. She did not stand up for herself much less the kids. For example, Rosemary got a pay check and tried to keep the money to not let Rex get it. She hid the money in the sock and game it to Jeannette, but Rex knew what was happening and took the sock. Rosemary just sat there and didn't try to do anything else. This took a toll on Jeannette because she didn't see anyone trying to help her and the one person that could have helped didn't. Also Rex came home all the time late at night drunk, and he would make a huge mess and break plates and vases. After a while the whole family just accepted that Rex was not going to stop, so they just cleaned up for him and the next day ex would have no recollection of the incident. Another section of the story line that the movie did not show was the week the Jeannette was in charge of the money. Rosmery was away and had told Jeannette to not give Rex any money. Unfortunately, Jeannette did not know how to say no to her dad. And when Rex asked for money and she said yes he kept going back. That whole week they were low on food because he kept taking the money. Jeannette has gone though the whole dad taking money fiasko before, when Jeannette and Lori had filled their get away from the parents piggy bank, Rex found it and took all the money. They had been saving up from

According to “The Four Styles of Parenting” by Kendra Cherry, she states that permissive parents have very few demands to make of their children, are nontraditional and lenient, allow considerable self-regulation and have relatively low expectations of maturity and self-control. In “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls, she explores lots of memories about her parents and often describes their parenting styles. In my opinion, her parents perfectly align with Cherry’s assessment of Permissive Parenting. According to Jeannette, her parents let the children do whatever they wanted without boundaries or restrictions.…

It’s quite literally the same thing all over again, just different events. The family moves, Dad gets a new job, Jeannette gets hurt because of her irresponsible parents, and Dad loses his job. Ridiculous, everything Jeannette’s parents touch get destroyed; whether it’s the kid’s constantly drunk father that messes up (like ruining Christmas) or their mother. I really did sympathize with Jeannette at that particular moment about Christmas though. While I am not a big fan of any holidays, my family and I always manage to get into fight no matter what.…

Somewhere Between Bad and Worse I'm sure you have been somewhere with a screaming kid and thought why are the parents letting their child scream. It comes to question on what makes a good parent? I think most of what makes a good parent a lot has to do with opinion instinct, values and what your beliefs which will change the the upbringing of a kid. I think that there is a lot of standards as a parent that most people can agree with and then there is a grey area that is usually the choice of the parent which will help form the adult that the child turns into.…

In the book and movie, the characters seemed to have the same motivation for their actions. They all had a reason to want to discover the body, and it became more obvious throughout the book and movie what their motivation was. The book and movie both portrayed the boys as a very close group, each having their own bond with each other. On the journey, during the night the boys all wake up and have a deep meaningful conversation about their lives. They also depicted Gordie’s group and Ace’s gang to hate each other which is very obvious in both mediums.…

Jeannette’s parents were giving the wrong examples like using inappropriate language and setting bad examples. Rex and Rose Mary had a dispute that caused Rose to get out of the car: “Dad stuck his head out of the window as he drove, hollering at mom, calling her a ‘stupid whore’ and a ‘stinking cunt’” (43). Dad’s action is showing Jeannette and her siblings that using inappropriate language is okay to say. Rex calling Rose these…

Although Rex did not directly do anything to put his family in harms way, he still made the choice to take the sharp turn in the beginning. Luckily nothing critical happened to Jeanette when she came flying out of the car. This could have resulted in a very tragic situation such as head trauma but to Rex’s advantage she was ok. Later Jeanette said that she “ got up and began to walk back towards the houses” (Walls 19). Within the time frame of Rex and Rosemary coming back to get her she could have gotten lost or stolen.…

Also in The Glass Castle, the children lose sight of meaningful relationships. Instead, they lose these relationships with their parents because they believe that getting to a better life is necessary, even if it isn’t agreed upon by their parents. Unlike in Great Expectations, it isn’t necessarily the children’s fault that these family bonds weaken. Their parents are holding them back from living a healthy life and they need to break free. With their parents not doing what is best for their kids and not keeping their promises of a better life, the kids lose their trust and faith in their parents.…

Rose Mary came from a rich family where her mother was a school teacher and provided for her very well. Rex came from a family who worked with what they had and although they had food on the table, his living conditions weren’t always the best. Jeannette’s mother coming from Phoenix and her dad coming from Welch, Virginia you would think their way of living would differ greatly. This was not the case when it came to those two together.…
