In writing about her mother Walls shows us that the benefits of telling the truth about your family can set you free and you become true to yourself. In the beginning of the book she seemed to be a very loving person who would do anything for her children but as time went on in some parts of the book she started to change a little bit. For example when it was winter in the book instead of sharing her food she kept her own little stash of chocolate under a blanket. To make it even worse she doesn't apologize but blames it on her “sugar addiction” and tries to leach on Rex’s problem which is actually a real one. Another great example is when Jeanette found out that she was holding out on land that was worth 1 million dollars. If they sold the land their lives could have changed for the better. Besides those two selfish examples of her later in the book I feel that towards the end she starts to become true to who she really is. Due to him lying about where he goes at night and his drinking issues cause problems with his relationship with the family and Jeannette more importantly. In the beginning of the book their relationship has always been a great steady one between a father and a daughter but as time went along Rex’s drinking problem got worser and worser. At times the drinking didn't really even matter because when Jeanette was young she didn't really understand the effects that the drinking has on her and their relationship but when she got older the way Rex really is opened up her whole view on him. An example of her starting to really realize that is when Rex took the money her and Lori were saving up to leave and go to New York. The moment the piggy bank with the money went missing she knew that it was him due to his recent track record of taking money to use for alcohol. Another example is when they got into a heated argument about Jeanette talking back to her mom. When Rex told her to apologize she said no and wasn’t taking him serious because she just thought of him as a drunk who lies and takes people's money. Even though they had their problems all during the book in the end I feel that their relationship was fixed because when Rex was starting to look worse and sick he finally confessed that he was going to die and due to him telling the truth all of the hate and pain that Rex caused to
