My essay on Kyoto protocol
Introduction:
Greenhouse gases are primarily made of water vapor and other elements such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide [1]. This gas is emitted mostly by energy plants, transportation vehicles and deforestation. In a huge amount, it acts like a thermal blanket for the Earth conserving the heat which leads to important environmental problems such as global warming [2]. These gases are generated by all nations and some nations are bigger polluters than others. As the problem was arising, the need to create an agreement to solve this problem arose. The Kyoto protocol is the first protocol that aimed to take control of the gases emission. The emissions are …show more content…
It involved most nations and consisted to control the greenhouses gases in a fair way so that some countries could pollute more while others had to reduce their emissions. The targets given to every nation are measurable and quantifiable which ease the evaluation of the protocol at the end of a given period. However, we have seen the targets is costly as greener energy are relatively more expensive. Some countries are more dependent to energy than others which makes it more expensive for some countries. As seen in the third paragraph, in overall, the Kyoto protocol failed as the global greenhouse gases emission increased instead of decreasing of 5% below the 1990 level. However, it did contribute to reduce the pollution. The protocol had great strengths, it is measurable and a goal can easily be set and tracked. It is also the first protocol that rallied all the countries for the greenhouse gases problem. A new Kyoto protocol would be promising with the engagement of all the nations including USA. This year, the 2015 Paris Climate Conference will address the same problem and might be more consistent as they have learned from the Kyoto
